Like most people who have a spiritual awakening and begin their healing journey, I learned A LOT through books. Sometimes it can be helpful to understand ourselves intellectually, before we take action towards change and embodying what we know.
Along my journey, it seemed like the right books popped up at the right times… as the saying goes “when the student is ready, the teacher appears.”
Here are some of my favorite books that have helped me along my journey so far. This list is not at all exhaustive, but these books in particular stood out to me and made a significant impact on my healing journey.
I read this book at a pivotal time in my healing journey, fresh out of an unhealthy relationship, trying to make sense of my emotions. To say this book inspired me is an understatement. It was through Brene’s words that I finally understood how to embrace vulnerability, how to be okay with imperfection, and open myself up to courageous living even in the face of fears and insecurities. This book even prompted me to share some vulnerable video diaries online while I was solo traveling.
A big fan of Gabor Mate and his nuanced perspective on trauma, illness, and healing, I felt as though this book captured everything I had been thinking about feeling about the healthcare system in the West. I felt exhausted with labels, being told I was “sick”, and shoved towards medication at the first sigh of depression or anxiety. This book so potently shifts attention to how our health system, culture and society, negatively influence our mental health and well-being, and offers a different, more compassionate approach to healing.
I read this book while I was studying trauma-informed coaching - I was fascinated on how trauma leaves such a profound imprint on our body and mind. Through this book, I understood how much change and healing we can promote in our society, healthcare and education systems, by shifting the question from “what’s wrong with you?” to “what happened to you?”
If you want a healthy and loving relationship, you have to understand attachment theory. I read this book when I kept seeing patterns pop up in my last relationship and realized how my anxious attachment kept me afraid and guarded. Understanding the science behind our attachment, and embracing that we NEED each other to thrive, really helped me start to heal towards a more secure attachment in my relationships.
As a lover of poetry, and a big fan of Canadian poet and writer Rupi Kaur, this book encompasses so much of what I was feeling and experiencing on my healing journey - how pain and joy can exist simultaneously, and how connection to the body and self is the gateway to peace. In this book, Rupi touches on love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity and more.
Beyond non-fiction books, I love reading memoires- real stories of real people who overcame challenge and alchemized their hardship into lessons through art. Sukleika takes you along her journey as she navigates sickness, health, and everything in between. Masterful storytelling that touched my heart and reminded me that there is beauty even in the darkest of times, filling me with hope.
A memoir, a story, a radical call to action empowering readers listen to our inner voice and trust ourselves. Glennon’s powerful storytelling and courageous vulnerability inspired me to to take responsibility for myself and my life, but do so in the most loving and compassionate way. Her feminist perspectives empowered me as a young woman who was looking for guidance.
Have you read any of these books? If so, let me know which one was your favorite and how it helped you along your journey!
As feminine beings living in a masculine world, we keep on running on the hamster wheel, with a never ending to-do list, never feeling enough, while our vitality, energy, libido, and ZEST for life fizzles out.
How do we change this?
Sometimes it can be hard to see the fine line between letting the universe lead the way and taking destiny into your own hands. People often say that “everything happens for a reason..."
But how much control do we really have?
